Quick Pick: Robot Unicorn Attack(s)

 Robot Unicorn Attack
Rating: 3.5/5

Robot Unicorn Attack Heavy Metal Edition
Rating: 3.5/5

That's from the song 'Always' by Erasure and by god, it may be the catchiest song I've ever heard. It's used in the game Robot Unicorn Attack, the most rainbow filled unicorn game ever made. It's also fantastically fun!
You control a robot unicorn that frolics between floating bits of land, trying not to fall to your death or crash into giant stars. You only have two controls: jump and boost. When you boost you zoom forward with a blast rainbows behind you. You can also destroy the stars while boosting.

Now, if rainbows and Erasure aren't manly enough for you, there's also a heavy metal edition that pumps up the nightmare factor of the game, literally. The first game is available online in flash form if you can't afford the price for the apps.

Special: Plants vs. Zombies Contest Winner!

And the winner of the Plants vs. Zombies contest is.... (Drum roll, please)

For his answer:
"I would first develop a mutated Venus flytrap That would be big enough to devour a person or zombie whole, then put it next to a Corpse Flower. The zombies would think its cool and go to the Venus Flytrap which then eats them."

NOTE: This app is TEMPORARILY on sale. It may not still be $0.99 when you read this.
Geometry Wars Touch
$4.99 $0.99
Rating: 5/5
Remember when I recommend Critical Wave about 2 weeks ago? Remember how I said that Geometry Wars was only on the iPad and not the iPhone? Well... I was happily mistaken! Yes, the game IS actually on the iPhone. And man is it just amazing. It's got all the same amazing game modes and features that was in the Xbox Live Arcade version a few years ago. PLUS, a game mode that the XBLA version lacked, titans.

Oh, and if you're unfamiliar with the Geometry Wars series, this will explain it all to you...

Quick Pick: Bit.Trip Beat

Rating: 4/5

BIT.TRIP BEAT is one of those games that teleports you back to your days at the arcade, but at the same time, sends you to the future. It's a game that combines Pong and some sort of futuristic rhythm game. But that's just it, this is a futuristic rhythm game. I could say more, but I think a video would do it better justice.

My only criticism is it's price point of $4.99. A tad bit expensive, but it's still a great game.

Free Gem: RjDj

Rating: 4.5/5

To say the experience of using RjDj is brain melting would be a vast understatement. RjDj is an app that uses the microphone in your iPhone or your headphones to create lush, vivid, and down right trippy soundscapes. It uses "scenes" that each have different effects, most of which cause me and all of my friends who have used the app to just say "HOLY ****!!!, WHAT THE **** WAS THAT!??!?!"

Check it out, it's free, and it'll make you lose your mind if you're exposed to it for too long.

ALSO, be sure to check out this contest, you could win a free copy of Plants vs. Zombies.

Collection: Ambiscience

FREE, $0.99, & $1.99
Rating: 5/5
This post is gonna be a little different. Instead of just profiling and promoting one app, I'm gonna talk about a whole collection of apps. Today, those are the Ambiscience apps, a collection that provides various forms of binural beats and ambient noise. Basically, the apps really help you relax. And hey, in a world of ever more stressful lives, I think we all need to just relax sometimes.

There are a total of 11 Ambiscience apps and four bundle packs. Each one features numerous magnificent ambient music tracks, as well as various binural beats and isochronic tones. Which are supposed to change your brain's frequency in order to relax you. I don't know if there have been any studies to prove this or not, but it's most definitely worked for me.

As I said before there are quite a few of these apps out, but if you don't know which one to check out, Tesla Software has a free sampler for you to check out.

Page with links to all of the apps.

Quick Pick: Critical Wave

Critical Wave

Rating: 4.5/5

You like Geometry Wars? I like Geometry Wars. It's a shame though that Geometry wars is only on the iPad and not on the iPhone and iPod Touch. Too bad... It actually is on the iPhone. Oh wait, we've got something just as good if not better! It's called Critical Wave, and it rivals Geometry Wars greatly in both visual brilliance and heart pounding,  tension filled, twin stick shooter action.

The main difference between Critical Wave and Geometry wars is that CW has stages, upgrades, and massive evolving bosses. Oh, and it's also got regenerating health, so one hit does not quite kill. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that CW is probably the best twin stick shooter in the app store, excluding Geometry Wars of course.

Special: No Proper Post Today

Hey guys. Sorry, but I won't be able to put up a proper post today. I was having computer problems last night, and it's taken me all day to fix them. I'll spare you the details. On top of that, my new iPod Touch 4G came today, I've just now gotten a chance you use, and I must say, Steve Jobs was right, this thing is magical.

Anyway, I should have a post up tomorrow, but I'm not sure when I'm gonna have free time this week to post my full report about the new iPod Touch. Keep an eye on the blog for that post coming soon. And also, maybe a contest...

Quick Pick: Peggle

Rating: 5/5

Ah, sweet sweet Peggle. This game devoured hours of my time on the PC, and when it came to the app store, it devoured many more. If you're unfamiliar with Peggle, then you've seriously been missing out. It's a game that can only be described as Plinko from the Price is right mixed with Pinball plus a little PCP.

You're main objective is to hit each and every orange peg on a board; hit them all and you go into EXTREME FEVER which is honestly the coolest thing in the world. No wait, ULTRA EXTREME FEVER is. Anyway, the app is only $0.99 and is sure to steal many hours of your free time.

Sale Items: Six Dimensions!

NOTE: These are apps are TEMPORARILY on sale. They may not still be free when you read this.

Today, I've got for you two 3D apps that usually cost money, but for now at least, are free. That's six dimensions for the price of none!

Duke Nukem 3D

$2.99 FREE

Rating: 3/5

Finally! I can finally enjoy my old friend Duke on my iPod. And on top of that, it's free for thermos being. What more could I ask for? Well... Good controls for one thing. It is still Duke Nukem 3D, but at least in my opinion, the touch screen controls are just awful. But hey, it's free right now so you really have nothing to lose for downloading it and giving it a shot yourself.

Download in iTunes

Galaxy on Fire 3D

$2.99 FREE

Rating: 4/5

As a good contrast of Duke Nukem's bad controls, I present to you Galaxy on Fire 3D. It's control's, while being vastly superior, do still take a bit of getting used to. The game itself is a fun space based flight shooter. It feels very polished in every area except for the bits when you're just flying through space doing nothing. It can get a bit monotonous around those points. But again, as with Duke Nukem 3D, it's free right now, and you have nothing to lose by trying it.

News: Viva la iPhone Bay?

Recently an app called IS Drive has appeared on the app store that allows people to access their ImageShack drive. The main issue is that the app can be configure to download torrents off of illegal fire sharing sites such as Mininova and The Pirate Bay.

This is strange of course because in the past Apple has been fiercely opposed to any kind of app that might promote piracy or other illegal activities. However, this app's acceptance through the app approval process maybe simple because no where does it say in it's name or description that is a torrenting app. Even it's creator says it isn't one, “I always had the thought that if I didn’t call the app a ‘torrent client,’ Apple would probably let it through the review process,” he told to Torrent Freak.

Still, the fact remains that this application is capable of downloading files illegally to an apple device. I doubt that the app or at least this version of it will be up on the app store for much longer. Then again, Apple has seemed to have a change of heart regarding app approval. As a result, lots of apps that were previously not permitted have arrived.

Usually I like to stay out of the whole piracy debate, but please, tell me what you think about the whole situation. Do you think it's good? Bad? Why? Do you even care?

Quick Pick: Osmos

Rating: 4/5

Newton's third law, you a fan of it? If you said yes, boy do I have the game for you. Osmos is a game that originally came out last year for the pc, but was recently ported to the iPhone. The basic idea is that you are a bubble that must eat smaller bubbles to grow and win the round. However, in order to move you have shoot small bubbles in the opposite direction of where you want to go. For every action, there is in equal and opposite reaction. I told you that you'd like this game.

The game has eight different game variants. Each providing a different kind of challenge. My only gripe with the game is that some of the levels that have you orbiting around giant bubbles are needlessly difficult. Still, I suggest you give this game a try.
